Barrel racing is a sport that requires dedication, passion, and hard work. The competition can be fierce, and the costs add up quickly. But barrel racers are nothing if not resourceful and many have found creative ways to make the most of their season. Whether you’re looking for ways to make extra money while competing or just want to make life on the rodeo road easier, here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years that will help you succeed!
Side Hustles
Barrel racing isn’t cheap—travel costs, entry fees, equipment maintenance—it adds up pretty quickly. So why not find a side hustle that you can take with you on the road? There are several options out there from freelance writing to farm-sitting to teaching lessons. My favorite side hustle? Setting barrels at local races! I love getting a front row seat to the show. Watching everyone's runs plus learning about how much work goes into producing races. Bonus you could also work off your entries at bigger shows.
Pick Up Some Freelance Work
Freelance opportunities are everywhere these days—you just have to be willing to look! From website design to social media management, maybe someone just needs their stalls cleaned at the race. there are countless freelance gigs available online as well. The great thing about freelancing is that it can be done remotely and often on a flexible schedule. So, whether you’re at home or at the barrel race, you can make money from anywhere.
Drive With Uber or Lyft
If you’ve got an extra car (or even if you don’t!), driving with Uber or Lyft is a great way to bring in some extra cash while on the road. Not only will this help pay for your travels, but it also provides an opportunity to meet new people along the way. Plus, when the job is done, you get paid directly into your bank account—no more waiting for checks in the mail!
Sell Your Used Gear On eBay Or Facebook Marketplace
Do you have any old tack lying around? Rather than let it collect dust in your trailer, why not make some money off of it? Selling used gear on eBay or Facebook Marketplace is easy and hassle-free—all you have to do is take pictures of what you want to sell and list them online. You never know who might be interested in buying something from you!
