5 Essential Tips for Beginner Barrel Racers

5 Essential Tips for Beginner Barrel Racers

Hey y’all! If you're just starting your journey in barrel racing, I know exactly how thrilling—and nerve-wracking—it can be. From finding the right horse to mastering that perfect turn around the barrel, the process takes time, but trust me, it’s all worth it. To help you get started on the right foot (or hoof), I’ve put together a few tips that have made a huge difference for me along the way.

1. Choosing the Right Horse
When I first got into barrel racing, I thought any horse with speed would do. But I quickly learned that there’s a lot more to it. Your horse needs to be agile, responsive, and willing to work with you as a team. If you’re still on the hunt for your partner, look for a horse with heart and hustle—you’ll feel it when you find the right one!

2. Gear Essentials
The right gear can make or break your performance. I remember struggling with tack that didn’t quite fit or wasn’t suited for barrel racing, and it showed in my runs. That’s why I’m a big fan of tack like SmarTack . It gives you the flexibility to adjust your setup as you figure out what works best for you and your horse. Plus, it’s like having multiple tack sets in one!

3. Training Routines
One thing I’ve learned is that consistency is key. Start small—figure-eight, rollbacks, and straight-line sprints were my go-to drills when Fireball and I first started. Don’t push too hard too fast; build up your speed and control gradually. Remember it's just 3 turns and 4 straight lines.

4. Nutrition and Care
Take it from someone who’s been there—your horse’s health is everything. Make sure they’re getting the right balance of nutrients and staying hydrated. My go to supplements are Finish Line Horse Products. Get 15% off with code "Liz15" online.

Don’t forget about yourself! Staying fit and flexible will help you stay sharp in the saddle, especially during competition.

5. Mental Preparation for Competitions
Let’s be real, the nerves will come, and that’s okay. I still get butterflies before a big run, but what’s helped me the most is focusing on the process, not the outcome. Visualize the course, breathe deeply, and remember all the hard work you’ve put in. Trust yourself and your horse—you’ve got this & Have fun!
